The Dot Lady

As you can see I changed the format of my blog again. Now that I finished my latest painting I have a little time to play with this blog. I chose this dot background because almost every painting I create has dots incorporated in it in one way or another from just a subtle use in the pistil of a flower to the decorative touch in my boarders. I choose to use painted boarders in my art instead of mats. You may notice in some of my works I allow the subject of the painting to overflow the boarder. I think it adds perspective to the painting. But, I digress....My point was dots. People are fascinated by them, about how precise and how many of them are in a painting. They want to know how I do them. My secret is first measure and mark where each one will be placed then using a high tech tool to execute them. It is called a toothpick! I am beginning to be called "The Dot Lady".

My Newest Painting

Appreciation of Friendship
22x28
This is my newest painting. I did it as a commission for our friends Roy and Sue. They just redecorated their bedroom and wanted a painting for over the bed. We delivered it this afternoon and they were pleased with how it complemented the room. I am happy that they are happy!
The title comes from the meaning of peach roses. I did a research on the meaning of rose colors and the peach rose has a number of meanings. The ones that jumped out at me were Friendship and Appreciation so I decided to use them in the title.
I would love to have comments if anyone has anything to say about this painting.

Geometric Abstracts May 28, 2010

Here are a few of my Geometric Abstract paintings. I do these as a change of pace. Painting the intricate designs are a stress reliever for me. I love the detail work in the designs. The one above is for sale for $100.

May 26, 2010

Busy day today. I woke up at 4:30 and couldn't get back to sleep so I got up and started working on the rose painting. I worked for 2 hours then at 7 I went to aerobic class and later in the day I got another 3 hours work done. We are off to square-dancing soon. Check out the next post for paintings of saguaros.

Happy birthday to grand-daughter Cheyenna who is 13 today!

Saguaro Paintings at the Tucson International Airport

I am posting photos of 5 paintings that I am showing at the Tucson International Airport as part of a group exhibition featuring saguaros. The above photo is of my son Brian and myself in front of the wall where my paintings were hung. He had just flown in from San Antonio for a week visit with us. We had a great time while he was here! Below are the five paintings. I sold two of them. I marked the prices on the ones that are still for sale. They will be hanging until mid June so if you have the opportunity to get to the airport be sure to look for the show.
This is the third version I have done of this painting. I sold both of the other ones. Each is done in different colors. It is for sale for $150.

Lots of bright colors on this one. It is for sale for $150

This is done in soft southwestern colors. Price $150

This one sold to a woman from Green Valley

I sold this one to a woman from Denver.

May 25, 2010 New Painting

"Amber Glow"

16X20

This is my newest painting. I did it for a friend so it is not for sale but if you like it I can do something that would be similar. I am now ready to start another painting which is a commissioned painting. It will be roses and will hang in a bedroom.

I have an idea for another southwest painting but it will have to wait until I am done with the rose painting.

May 25, 2010 Change of Format.

Please read the post that is after the Fantasy Flower post. It will explain the change of format.

Later today I will post my newest painting and yes, it is a Southwest painting.

May 25, 2010 Fantasy Flowers.

Here are a few paintings that are part of my "Fantasy Flowers" collection. I combine my enjoyment of painting intricate designs with my love of flowers. The title of this one is "Antique Opulence". It is sold. From here on out I will post the price of a painting if it is not sold.

This is " Burnished Bronze". As you can see I match the subject matter to the frame rather than doing it the other way around. I always start a painting buy putting a blank canvas in a frame and look at it until "see" something in that blank canvas. I then create what I see. Sometimes I stare for a long time and other times something pops into my mind immediately. I also wake up in the middle of the night with an idea for a painting then must look for a frame to fit the idea but I always choose the frame before I start the painting. Price on this one is $135.

This is "Royal Arrangement". It is one of my personal favorites. I sold it last summer.

May 25, 2010

It has been suggested that I change the layout of how I post the photos of my paintings and to post a comment under each one to make it easier to read. I think it is a good idea so I am going to try to figure out how to do that. You know, this is an "old dog" trying to learn "new tricks". I am a self-taught artist so now I must become a self-taught blogger. Painting is much easier! LOL

I finished my latest painting yesterday and am now in the process of putting the polycrylic on it and then must frame and photograph it. I will post it later today. While it is drying I will try to change the layout of this blog. I am going to post some of my "fantasy flowers". Of course, since the most recent post is on top, by the time you read this you will have seen them already.

May 24, 2010

I thought I would continue the flower theme and post some cactus flowers. I will list the names of the paintings from bottom to top. The first is
"Pretty & Prickly", "Hedgehog in Bloom", "Queen of the Night", "Red Beauty", and "Santa Rita".
By-the-way on another subject,I bowled a 162 average today! I will only post my bowling scors if they are good.
Now I am going to my studio to finish the desert scene I am working on with the new brushes I bought today. My old ones were really ratty so I am happy that I have some new ones : ) !

May 24, 2010

Yesterday I posted paintings of roses. Now I am showing paintings of other kind of flowers. The one to the left is a painting I did for my grand-daughter Megan. The one above was done for my grand-daughter Kara who loves all things tropical. I would like to mention that the 'Wine & Roses" painting I posted yesterday was done for my grand-daughter Laura and "Roses for Sharon" was done in memory of our daughter Sharon who passed away in 1998. Her favorite color was yellow. I plan to do a painting for each of our grandchildren as they become adults and have homes of their own. We have 14 grand children and so far I have done paintings for 6 of them.
If I have time I will post photos of a different style of paintings later today. We are off to the bowling alley in a few minutes. More later......

May 22, 2010

I completed this painting a few days ago. I love using vibrant colors and enjoy painting ruffles and folds so what better subject matter than a Mexican sarape? In fact that is what the title is, "Sarape". The size is 18x22 unframed. It is interesting how I got the frame. It came from a garage sale like most of the frames I use but I am not the one who bought it. Last summer my daughter-in-law, Leslie from Dallas, GA found 6 frames like this at a garage sale and bought them for me. She planned to keep them until we made a driving trip to visit but since we won't be doing that until this September we finally decided she should send them to me. They were a bargain even with having to pay postage. Thanks Leslie for buying them!

I will be starting a new painting just as soon as I get off the computer. I am not sure what I will be painting yet but think maybe a desert scene. Until I get the new one done I will post pictures of some of my paintings that are showing at the Tucson International Airport at an exhibition featuring saguaros.

May 22, 2010

I did this painting early in May. The title is "Blue Bottle & Prickly Pears". Size is 13X17 unframed. The frame is an antique frame I found at a garage sale. It was in pretty bad shape so I had to do some repair work and also repaint it. I love the scalloped inside edge. I have been told by people who are not familiar with prickly pears that they look like large strawberries. We have a very large prickly pear cactus in our backyard. I'll post a photo of it some day.

My first attempt at downloading a photo.

This is me in my studio working on a painting. I paint almost every day. While I have always considered myself an eclectic artist painting a variety of subject matter I find myself leaning more towards southwest oriented paintings. Since I live in Arizona that seems the natural direction to go.

I plan to post photos of paintings as I complete them and also ones I have done in the past. I have done two new ones since the beginning of May that I have not shown at any exhibitions yet.
