Something Different

Chameleon on Clay Pot
22X26
Here is my newest painting.  It is based on the photo you see below.  This is a pot that belongs to friends who though I might want to use the idea for a painting.  It was something different so I thought it would be fun to do my own version of the chameleon and pot. I gave the chameleon a whimsical look and added the cactus to help fill the canvas.  I picked the frame first.  The one I chose is a large golden oak frame.  I decided to keep the color scheme simple using shades of brown and green.  They help to bring out the beautiful wood grain of the frame.  It doesn't have the impact of some of my more colorful paintings but I think the more subdued earth tones have their own value and will look good  in the right setting.

I am tossing around some ideas for my next painting and also will be doing a chair that is a shared project with a neighbor.  She and her husband are quilters and they came up with a beautiful quilt pattern for the seat.  I will paint the chair frame and pick up some of the pattern and colors used in the seat.

If you are interested in more information and prices of any of the paintings I have posted in this blog you can email me at rogpamd@msn.com

Happy Birthday Jackson Pollock

Today would have been Jackson Pollock's 99th birthday.
Here is one of his paintings.
Below are some of mine that I did years ago for my personal use.

I did not name these paintings.  I have lots of fun doing them.
this one is 24X30

I think I would call this one "Tornadoes"
size is 15X30

This is a large one 30x40 .  It is hanging in my great room.

This one hangs in our bedroom over the bed.
Size is 24X30

This is a small one 11X14 that I did recently.
I titled it "Hot,Hot, Hot".  It is for sale.
I do enjoy painting abstracts and people seem to like them but they don't sell as well as my southwest stuff.
I am ready to start a new painting that is influenced by a photo given to me by some friends.  It is a clay pot with a lizard sitting on it that they own.  They thought it might make a nice painting.  They were right.  As always, I will post a photo of the new painting when it is done.

Aunt Betty's Painting

Memories of Loved Ones
12X16
I did this painting for my Aunt Betty.  Each item in the painting has special meaning to her.  The four Love stamps in the frame were a gift from her husband that he gave her shortly before he died.  The Bible belonged to her daughter Joy who passed away and the cross bookmark was made by my daughter Sharon before she died.  My mother Donna, who is Betty's sister, had a passion for flowers so the roses are in her memory.  The heart box was decorated by two special little girls who gave it to Betty as a gift.  She uses it as a keepsake box for photos and obits of other loved ones.  It meant a lot to me to be able to do this painting as a tribute to all our loved ones who have passed away.

Tangerine Sky

Tangerine Sky
14X26
I finished the new desert scene which is long and narrow.  It gives a new perspective to my traditional desert paintings.  I like the green wood frame which accents the color of the sky.
My next project is a painting my Aunt Betty commissioned me to do.  It will be full of special memories in her life.  I look forward to doing it.

Cactus and Horses

Sepia Cactus
20X20

Phantom Herd
14X24
Two more paintings completed.  My inspiration on the cactus painting goes back to the days when my father was a professional photographer.  This was from the 40's to the 70"s.  Back in the day when there were very few colored photographs.  Much of his work was sepia toned.  I decided to try to reproduce that look in a painting.  I was happy with the results.  The Phantom Herd is a subject I have done a number of times before and each time the painting sold.  Every version has been slightly different from the others.  I decided to do it again in yet a different way.

I am now working on another desert scene.  What makes this one different is the frame dimension which is long and narrow similar to the Phantom Herd frame.  I have had requests for a desert painting in that size from a number of people so I thought I would try it.  I have done smaller ones in that format but this one is much larger.  I am also working on a small commissioned painting of Mexican tissue paper flowers.  I'll post photos of each when they are done.

Two paintings I completed this week

Virgin of Guadalupe on Purple
22X28
Here is another version of my Virgin of Guadalupe painting.  It is larger than the last one and it is done  in a different color scheme.  I also added the roses in the corners.  I enjoy painting the same subject matter in different ways.  I've mention before that all my paintings are original and that I don't sell prints.  Because of that, when I have a popular painting I redo it in different ways.  Another example is the painting below.  I have done a number of paintings featuring the "Endless Rose".  I have done them in various sizes from 7X9 to the larger one I just completed which is 18X24.  I also have done it in different colors.

Endless Rose
18X24

I am currently working on two paintings.  One is "Images of Arizona" which is one of my most popular paintings.  I am not sure how many versions of it I have sold.  I am also working on a new cactus flower painting which is different than anything I have done before.  I'll post photos when they are complete.

Happy New Year!

Wishing you many blessings in 2011.  We spent New Years Eve picking up neighbors at the airport.  We were in a IHOP at midnight.  The new year slipped in without a notice except for "Happy New Year" shouted in the kitchen.

I am working on some big paintings that I hope will hang in exhibitions this year.  I have applied for a number of shows and have one more that has a deadline at the end of January.  It may be a few months until I hear if I have been accepted.

I usually work on two paintings at once with ideas for others dancing around in my mind.  I look forward to the time I spend working on a painting and have a real sense of accomplishment when I complete a painting and it fulfills the vision I had.

When I sell a painting I always wonder where it will hang in its new home.  If I friend buys it I can see it when I visit but most of the time I sell to people I haven't met so have no idea of where the painting will hang.  I was pleased to get the photo I am posting below that was emailed to me by a couple in CA showing me where they hung the painting.  It is so nice to see how well the colors in the painting complement the room.
